Thank you to Brett Powers, former voice of Hawks Basketball! See his message below to our former and future Hawks community.
"To the entire Hawk Nation:
It is with very mixed emotions that I send this message to relay the bittersweet news that I will not be returning as the “Voice of Hawk Basketball” this year. I have been offered the chance to go into the football and basketball broadcast booth in support of my employer school Tri-Cities Prep in Pasco, where I initially got my start in high school broadcasting over 12 years ago. In the early 2010s, circumstances came about that put an end to that broadcasting opportunity.
So, once the Prep gig ended, I thought I was done for good with radio, until Rod Fazzari of Two Hearts Communications asked me if I would be willing to cover CPHS hoops, and I leapt at the chance, just because I enjoy the work, though I DID have some trepidation about covering kids I did not teach.
Well, that trepidation was entirely unfounded. It was surprising for me how quickly I got attached to covering sports for a high school that I do not teach in, but it occurred naturally enough, I guess, due to the consistent effort and spark provided by Hawk athletes. But the attachment also came about due to the warmth and acceptance of the broader CPHS community, especially the fans in the stands, and for the kind words of support you have given me over the years. While I deeply appreciate folks saying they enjoy my work, I have to say that you don’t enjoy it nearly as much as I enjoyed calling the games. I really came to look forward to basketball season and going on the road with CPHS basketball and thoroughly enjoyed myself.
So it is decidedly bittersweet that I write to tell you that I will not be returning. I am excited to cover the students I teach, but I am also sad to no longer be able to cover the CPHS athletes or to be around its welcoming community that I looked forward to seeing every game day.
Thank you all so very much for welcoming me into your community.
Rest assured I will be watching and rooting for CPHS, albeit from a distance, in the future.
GO HAWKS!!!!!!
With much warmth and fondness,
Brett Powers, “The Voice of Hawk Basketball”
